Real Estate Development Industry Group

The goal of the Masters in Real Estate Development Industry Group is to create a strong network of Masters in Real Estate Development alumni in an effort to enhance personal and professional connections among alumni members through networking and other social events, to foster continued knowledge gain through education and instruction based programs, and to aid in the expansion and promotion of the Masters in Real Estate Development program at George Mason University.


Masters in Real Estate Development Industry Group events will have a social, educational, or charitable focus and will be held at least quarterly.

Senior Vice President - Real Estate Lending Officer in the Commercial Real Estate Group

Cardinal Bank

Alexandra Bettius is a senior vice president – real estate lending officer in the Commercial Real Estate Group at Cardinal Bank. Bettius specializes in non-owner occupied commercial and residential real estate secured transactions, including acquisition, development, construction and permanent lending. Her 8 years of experience includes structuring unique lending products based on the need of the customer, the underlying characteristics of the collateral, sponsorship, market conditions and Cardinal’s credit standards, in addition to portfolio management.

Bettius received her Master of Science in Real Estate Development from George Mason University in 2013, and represented Mason in the 2013 Capital Challenge Real Estate Competition, where her team took top honors. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Rollins College in 2007, and completed University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea Program with a concentration in economics and globalization, Pacific Rim Itinerary in 2006.

Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian, P.C.

Karen L. Cohen is an attorney with the law firm of Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian, P.C. where her practice focuses on business and real estate transactions, commercial leasing, and land use and zoning law. Cohen holds an undergraduate architecture degree from University of Virginia and a law degree from Georgetown University. She practiced law for fifteen years prior to enrolling in Mason’s School of Business as a member of the first cohort of the Master of Real Estate Development program in 2009. She graduated from the program with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Student and has continued to be a leader and advocate for the program. After graduating from the program, Cohen authored a strategic plan to develop a vision and corresponding action plan for the future of Mason’s Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship and the Masters in Real Estate Development program it supports. The goals of that plan were met, the program continues to grow and prosper, and the program's continued success is a source of great pride to Cohen and her fellow Masters in Real Estate Development alumni.

Senior Vice President and Real Estate Lending Officer
Cardinal Bank

Jason R. McDonough is a senior vice president and real estate lending officer at Cardinal Bank. McDonough has been with Cardinal Bank since 2006 and has served in various positions on the Retail and Commercial side of the Bank. McDonough has been in the Real Estate Department since 2010 and specializes in financing residential acquisition, development, and construction projects for home builders and investors in the Northern Virginia market. A native to Northern Virginia, McDonough holds a BS from Virginia Tech, and was a 2012 Honors Graduate of the Virginia Bankers Association School of Bank Management, where he also served as Class Secretary. McDonough recently received his Master of Science in Real Estate Development from George Mason University where he was named Most Outstanding Student in the program in 2015. He represented Mason as the coach in the 2015 NAIOP Capital Challenge Real Estate Case Competition where his team took top honors. McDonough gives back to the business community through his service as a board member of HomeAid Northern Virginia, and as a Steering Committee member of the Cardinal Bank Charity Classic, Cardinal’s signature fundraising event. McDonough also serves on the board of the Northern Virginia Builders Industry Association (NVBIA).


Whitebread webJoe Whitebread '15

Land Acquisition Project Manager

Joe Whitebread has 6 years of real estate experience and is currently a Land Acquisition Project Manager at PulteGroup, as well as a licensed civil engineer. Whitebread is responsible for identifying land for purchase and eventual development as well as assisting with due diligence during the acquisition process. Whitebread’s goal is to identify sites for purchase and development in order to create a unique community and to help create a place where people can realize the American Dream of home ownership. Prior to working at PulteGroup, Whitebread worked as a civil engineer with Bowman Consulting. While at Bowman, Whitebread was responsible for was responsible for managing and producing engineering plans for approval for various residential, commercial, and transportation projects. Whitebread has experience working in urban, suburban, and rural locations. Whitebread graduated from George Mason University with a MS in Real Estate Development in 2015, and from Virginia Tech with a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2009.
