Jason Howell

Jason Howell, 1997 accounting alum, is running as an independent for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District.  He hopes to bring needed change to Congress, which is where he believes the problems with today’s government lies.  When asked about the miss representation of the American public and the faint progress being made in Congress, Howell responded, “When there’s a fire in the kitchen, you don’t go to the bedroom to put it out.  That’s where the biggest challenge is.  There are zero independents right now in the House of Representatives, and that’s part and parcel [to] that sort of gridlock that we have.”

Howell has no previous government experience, but over the years has created his own accounting business for musicians, worked as a controller for what is now Jiffy Lube Live, and most recently was a recruiter for Axis, a division of Randstad.  One of Howell’s most notable achievements is his self-published book America: Still the Land of Opportunity, Always a Home for the Brave.  The combination of his work experiences and the downward spiral of the American economy prompted Howell to write this book seeing that there was a need for a book on patriotic development.

Howell’s inspiration to run for office occurred during the time he was writing America: Still the Land of Opportunity, Always a Home for the Brave.  When asked about his decision, Howell said, “I was writing that book, and I had C-SPAN on, and I was watching them kind of create this debt crisis, and that’s when it struck me that we, people in our generation, need to do something rather than just watch,” he said. “And here I was, writing about a concept that I believed in, and I needed to maybe be about it, because the country was calling. And that’s when I decided to run for office.”

Howell, 37, currently resides in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington, VA with is wife.  To read more about Jason Howell and his political stance on today’s controversial topics, see the article Independent Candidate Howell Hopes to Unseat Moran published on Ballston-Virginia Square Patch.
