About Us

Student Media at George Mason University is dedicated to providing hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students who aspire to a career in media production or journalism, as well as those who simply wish to pursue a creative passion or hobby.

With over 60 computers, 4 state-of-the-art audio and video studios, a bustling newsroom, and 16 sections of 1-credit co-curricular workshops, Student Media is a unique learning environment for Mason students to learn new skills and practice their craft by producing content that is seen by their peers, professors, and community.

Our students typically start working with us during their freshman year and stay involved for their entire Mason career — pursuing higher levels of responsibility or discovering talent in areas they had not previously explored. Many students also find that their experience with Student Media transforms their resume and uniquely prepares them for high-profile internships and post-graduation success.

The Student Media Office has (2) positions available: Sales Associate and Marketing and Research Associate.

Location: The HUB Suite 1201

About the Position: Sales Associate

The role of the Advertising Team is to increase revenue through advertising efforts for all Student Media groups. Sales Associates work together to carry out the front line aspects of the advertising process including cultivating and contacting potential advertisers, maintaining relationships with current advertisers, and internal office duties. Sales Associates will creatively pitch advertising packages to clients, coordinate ad design and ad placement, and enter ad orders/specs into advertising software and process payments.  The Sales Associate will hand more of the front-line duties of the Advertising Team. The Sales Associates will be required to attend various position and office-related training’s throughout the year both in person and/or virtually.

Specific duties include

  • Handle all first-pitch advertising calls and face-to-face client visits
  • Generate and contact new & returning sales leads
  • Check voicemails and emails daily and respond to all advertising inquiries, questions, and concerns
  • Assist with advertising research i.e. college trends, competitors, etc.
  • Maintain database of current and potential advertiser contacts
  • Complete, keep up with, & file all order form paperwork
  • Process credit card payments in a timely & secure manner
  • Occasionally assist the Communication Team with front desk receptionist duties during breaks and between shifts
  • Attend weekly team meetings & all staff meetings on Friday mornings

Required Skills

  • Excellent customer service skills – on the phone and in person
  • Strong follow-through & organizational skills
  • Previous experience using Excel
  • Work well independently and act proactively in a team environment

About the Position: Marketing and Research Associate

The role of the Advertising Team is to increase revenue through advertising efforts for all Student Media groups. The Marketing and Research Associate will work on reviewing trends in college media sales, comparing competitor rates, compiling spreadsheets in Excel, and internal office duties.  The Marketing and Research Associate will handle more of the back-side internal duties of the Advertising Team. Marketing and Research Associates will be required to attend various position and office-related training’s throughout the year both in person and/or virtually.

Specific duties include

  • Research college media advertising trends and maintain database
  • Research current competitors and maintain database
  • Check voicemails and emails daily and respond to all advertising inquiries, questions, and concerns
  • Maintain database of current and potential advertising clients
  • Complete, keep up with, & file all order form paperwork
  • Process credit card payments in a timely & secure manner
  • Occasionally assist the Communication Team with front desk receptionist duties during breaks and between shifts
  • Attend weekly team meetings & all staff meetings on Friday mornings
