Once you start considering the idea of pursuing an MBA, you will quickly learn the importance of GMAT scores for MBA program admissions. Most MBA programs require a GMAT or GRE score.
A GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, is a computer adaptive test that assesses a person’s analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in standard written English in preparation for being admitted into a graduate management program. A GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is an exam aimed to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of time but not in any specific field of study. Both exams are administers by GMAC, the Graduate Management Admission Council, a global non-profit organization comprised of leading graduate business schools around the world.
The GMAT exam is accepted at more than 5,800 programs around the world and administered at 570 test centers in 113 countries.
Required GMAT scores for MBA
At George Mason, MBA candidates generally should expect to have a GMAT score of 550 or above. Submitting a GMAT score is a requirement for admission to the program – one that cannot be waived (no exceptions). The average GMAT for the last MBA cohort at Mason was 612.
When evaluating your chances of getting into an MBA program, it is important to compare your GMAT scores to the average GMAT scores for MBA programs you are considering to weigh how this portion of your application will hold up. If you feel that your scores are a little low, you may want to consider getting tutoring prior to the exam or taking a class and then taking the exam again. Scores can be automatically sent to 5 schools within 20 days of taking the exam for no cost. If you need to send scores to additional schools, there is a fee of $20 each.
Of course, an increased score does not guarantee admission to any MBA program; it is just one of many points of consideration in your application. Generally, a strong GMAT or GRE score will strengthen your application and may outweigh other areas of weakness such as little professional experience.
