The Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship (CREE) successfully organized the first NoVa Apartment Summit on March 18th at the Hilton in Alexandria. Over 100 attendees heard six speakers provide a mix of apartment market analytics and operational best practices. The two keynote speakers, Caitlin Sugrue Walter (National Multi-Housing Council) and Greg Leisch (Delta Associates) each reviewed apartment markets in 2013 and predicted performance in 2014–for both the national scene and the Northern Virginia submarkets.
In the afternoon, four presentations covered green apartment management (David Borchardt, Towers Companies), affordable multifamily (A.J. Johnson, ), social media marketing (Marc Silverman, CORT) and micro-units (Sandy Silverman, Perkins Eastman). The lunch presentation featured Jerry Friedlander providing an update on legislative issues of import to Virgina’s apartment owners and managers.
Four MRED students/alums—Becky Oliver, Roger Lin, Rushabh Shah and Evgeniia Lebedinskaia–attended the Summit as staff; and helped with registration, speaker guides, and MRED booth support.
CREE’s Summit co-sponsor was the Northern Virginia Apartment Association (with special thanks to NVAA President Janice Haub and Executive Director Barbara Duncan). Both organizations look forward to reprising the Summit next year in what is hoped will become an annual event.
