Wambui Mungai received a BA (Honors) from York University, a LLB from the University of Ottawa and an LLM from The George Washington University Law School. While at the University of Ottawa, she served as the president of the Black Law Students Association, volunteered as an intake clerk for the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic, as well as taught legal issues concerning sexual assault and equity, which included an exploration of the constitution, at several middle-schools.

Mungai began her legal career at a private practice criminal law firm where she specialized in litigation. Her professional experience has consisted of litigation, advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, and policy reform in many areas of law. Most recently, Mungai works in the area of international law specifically dealing with issues concerning human rights and diplomatic relations.

Mungai is an adjunct professor and teaches the legal environment of business in George Mason's School of Business.
