Profile:

Pallab Sanyal is an associate professor of information systems at the School of Business at George Mason University. He received his PhD in information and decision sciences, and MBA in management of information systems and finance from the Carlson School of Management at University of Minnesota. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, India. 

His primary research interest lies in understanding how people make decisions in complex economic institutions and how the decisions are influenced by the design choices of the institutions. His research has been published in Management Science, MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS), and the Journal of Operations Management (JOM) among other outlets. He has presented his research at many international conferences, including ICIS, WISE, WITS and INFORMS-CIST. At WITS, his papers were twice nominated for the best paper award. Sanyal's dissertation research won the Design Science Research Award from the INFORMS Information Systems Society. He has also received the best reviewer award from the Information Systems Society and Information Systems Research (ISR). In 2014, Sanyal was nominated for the Mason Emerging Researcher Award at George Mason University.

Sanyal teaches IT management, data mining, networks and security, and database management to Executive MBA, MBA, and undergraduate students. He teaches both traditional face-face-face as well as fully online courses. He has received multiple teaching awards at University of Minnesota, and has been nominated for multiple teaching awards at George Mason University. In 2014, Sanyal received a George Mason University Teaching Excellence Award.

Prior to joining academia, Sanyal worked as an information technology (IT) consultant for nine years—in India, Singapore, the UK, and the US. His industry experience includes programming, systems design and implementation, project management, and business analytics.

Sanyal is a member of the Association of Information Systems (AIS), and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).
