Mahesh P. Joshi is The Director of Research & Practice and Associate Professor of Global Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the School of Business, George Mason University since 2002. He received his PhD in Strategic Management and International Business from Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. Prior to receiving his PhD, he received a BS in Mathematics and Operations Research from Bombay University (Mumbai, India) and also obtained a postgraduate diploma in international business from Xavier Institute of Management, Mumbai, India.
Dr. Joshi has a wide variety of teaching interests. These include, strategic management, industry analysis, innovations and technology, entrepreneurship, global strategies, managing change, business model analysis, cross-cultural management and multidisciplinary capstone courses. He has been teaching these courses across all levels of students that include undergraduate, graduate, executive students and online students at GMU and other institutes. Students find him a very challenging and creative teacher and a few years ago the George Mason Executive MBA students recognized him with the "Teacher of Year" Award. In addition, students have awarded him “Commitment to Academic Excellence” award. One of his research papers that focused on experiential exercises in teaching strategic management (Journal of Management Education) has been received very well and many teachers of strategy across the globe have adopted his approach in their introduction class. He is one of the key instructors in delivering executive training at the School of Business and has provided executive training to several US based corporations (such as Oracle, TW Cable, General Dynamics). He also has trained senior managers in the federal government; the list of departments includes Commerce Department and State Department. In addition, he has provided executive training to trade associations and not-for profits such as SHRM, the CFO Alliance and the American Red Cross.
Dr. Joshi's research interests include process innovativeness, adoption of new technology, and strategic change. He studies links between new technologies and the phenomenon of corporate entrepreneurship and innovations. His research includes topics such as business continuity planning, corporate governance, global strategy, deregulation and strategy, implementation of strategy by middle managers and strategy and public sector. Dr. Joshi has published articles in many journals and the non-exhaustive list includes Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Operations Management, decision sciences journal, IEEE-Transaction of Engineering Management, Long Range Planning, Corporate Governance, Corporate Reputation Review, International Journal of Production Research, Service Industries Journal, International Journal of Operations & Production Management and Management Decision.
Besides teaching and researching, Dr. Joshi provides consulting to public sector, private sector and not-for profit organizations and has been a founding member of an Internet based business. His consulting assignments have been focused on formulation and implementation of global strategy, opportunity recognition and feasibility studies for entrepreneurial firms, international market entry decisions, competitive intelligence analysis, impact of new technology on established firms, global strategic alliances, practice of corporate entrepreneurship and management of start-up ventures. For more than five times he has been awarded “School of Business Service Award” to reflect his ability to connect with the local business community and represent George Mason University in the business community in general.
