Philpot received a PhD in communications research from Stanford University. He has had a successful career as a professional broadcasting manager in which he has held positions as News and Public Affairs Manager of a San Francisco Television Station, as a producer of nationally syndicated children’s programs (for which he won a Peabody and an Ohio State Award), as National Director of Children’s Television for the Public Broadcasting Service and for 13 years as Executive Director of Marketing for the Broadcasting Division of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
In this position Philpot supervised syndication, promotion and advertising sales for three nationally syndicated business programs. During this time he contributed chapters to the Rand McNally Handbook of Communication, Media published by Prentice Hall and popular articles in San Francisco magazine and Radio and Television Digest.
In January 2002,after teaching for one semester as an adjunct, Philpot left the broadcasting industry and began teaching full-time at George Mason. Currently he teaches courses in Introduction to Marketing, Marketing Research and Marketing Communication.
