Patriot Pride…A Family Tradition

Have you ever considered what life would be like if you married your high school sweetheart?

For over 30 years, Scott ’85 and Helen Hine ’85 (nee Mekenie) have shared their lives together with a bond that has grown stronger since joining the Mason alumni family. These active alumni association volunteers are most recognizable to young alumni as they annually assist with graduation and Homecoming activities and rarely miss Mason basketball games.Scott-Helen-Hine

The loving couple met in high school while working at Fischer Hardware in Springfield, Virginia and officially started dating on July 11, 1980. Scott attended West Springfield High School, and Helen was a student at Robert E. Lee High School. The two followed in the footsteps of Helen’s older sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth (Lisa), and continued their education at George Mason University both majoring in business degree programs. They both lived on-campus in the Apartments.

Scott and Helen were a part of the first graduating class to have commencement activity in the Patriot Center, a memory ingrained by then President George W. Johnson wearing a hard hat during the ceremony to symbolize his commitment to the students and growth of the university. Scott often tells stories of his time as part of Mason’s Campus Radicals, an informal student group very similar to the current day Patriot Platoon and they preserve their passion by being Mason men’s basketball season ticket holders.

As 2010 marks their 25th class reunion, Scott and Helen’s connection to the university is magnified as they return to campus not only as seasoned alums, but as proud Mason parents. Their eldest children—twins Audrey and Kayla—are sophomore business majors.

Patriot Pride runs deep in the Hines family and Scott and Helen look forward to introducing future generations of the family to Mason.
