Virtual Internship Tips

CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE
Create a routine that makes space between your home and work life. Try a morning workout, schedule a walk with friends, read a book, or sip  your coffee or tea outside. The idea is to get to  start your morning with something other than getting straight into work.

GET DRESSED
Shower, get dressed, brush your teeth, fix your hair, etc. Do whatever you would normally do to get ready to go into the office. Simply getting ready can help you transition  more easily into work mode

MEALS
The temptation to snack is real. Do your best to plan out meals and snacks ahead of time so you don’t have to scramble. Keep healthy snacks on hand such as fruit and nuts. Lastly, avoid eating at your desk if possible.

DESIGNATE A WORKPLACE AND MAKE IT YOURS
Set aside space to serve as your desk, preferably away from other areas of the home. Use the space only for work, and resist the urge to use it outside of work hours.

TAKE BREAKS
Don’t fall into the trap of working for hours on end without taking a break. Even if it’s just a 5-10 minutes microbreak. Give the Pomodoro Method a try to ensure you’re taking adequate breaks throughout the day.

MOVE
Moving throughout the work day is crucial. Try pacing during phone calls or scheduling calls while you walk. In addition, be sure to schedule time for exercise – if it’s not on the calendar, it’s easy to skip it.

SOCIALIZE
That’s right – join the company happy hour, reach out to a fellow intern for a coffee chat, or reach out to an alum for a walk and talk over the phone. It can be easy to feel isolated, so remember to be proactive about staying connected.

NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE ON ZOOM
Give your eyes and mind a break. Not every call or meeting has to happen with video cameras on, so be sure to establish what needs a formal Zoom meeting and what can be done in a quick phone conversation.

SET BOUNDARIES

Remember, just because your internship is virtual doesn’t mean that it’s a 24/7 job. Set a clock-out time and stick to it, and be sure to use your time off the clock on yourself to recharge.

PRACTICE GOOD SLEEP HYGIENE

Just as you start your day with a morning routine, end your day with an evening routine that helps you wind down for bed. Listen to your favorite podcast. Go for an evening walk. However you unplug, do your best to get to bed at the same time each night to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
