“Michael Gallagher was chosen as the Alumni Service Award winner for 2015 because he has remained actively involved with the Alumni Association, the School of Business, and the university while also achieving demonstrated success in the business world,” says Adriane Ackley, director of alumni operations.

It is fitting that Gallagher’s service to the university is being recognized as he has committed his professional career to recognizing achievement across the diverse spectrum of business. His commitment to honoring excellence was sparked during his tenure as vice president of The New York Festivals, organizer of the some of the world’s largest international awards competitions for film, television, advertising, and other media. To honor the millions of business executives and workers worldwide who quietly accomplish innovative and extraordinary achievements in the workplace every day, Gallagher founded the Stevie® Awards in 2002. The name Stevie comes from the Greek name Stefanos, which means “crowned.”

Aside from his success in the business world, Gallagher has also stayed very involved at Mason.

In 2005, he worked closely with the School of Business Alumni Relations staff to create the first Annual Business Alumni Celebration, the School of Business’ premiere alumni event. In 2009, he became active with the School of Business Alumni Chapter, serving as vice president of events and then led the group as president for the next two years. After completing his tenure as president, he served as an at-large member for another year and most recently led the chapter’s fundraising committee.

In addition to his role at the School of Business Alumni Chapter, Gallagher has served two terms on George Mason University Alumni Association’s Board of Directors as the School of Business representative and is a frequent judge of student business plans for capstone case competitions in both undergraduate and graduate programs at Mason’s business school.

Also being honored at the 2015 Celebration of Distinction is Joe Ragan III MS Accounting ’91, who will be receiving the School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award.

The School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes one School of Business alumnus each year who has demonstrated a high caliber of professional achievement in the for-profit, not-for-profit, or public sectors.

Ragan, a member of the School of Business Dean’s Advisory Council, serves as chief financial officer at Globe Specialty Metals Inc., a leading producer of Silicon Metal and Silicon Based Alloys. Prior to joining Globe, Ragan spent five years as chief financial officer at Boart Longyear, the world’s largest drilling services contractor for the global mining sector operating in more than 40 countries and selling its products in nearly 100 countries.

Both School of Business alumni will be recognized at the Celebration of Distinction on April 23.
