Sustainable Real Estate Development Projects

In the Washington, D.C. metro area, there seems to be no shortage of sustainable real estate development projects in the works. Sustainable real estate projects will continue to grow as businesses and communities look towards economic development that does not deplete natural resources.

Groups such as NAIOP and Urban Land Institute (ULI) focus on sustainable real estate as part of their mission. According to their websites, NAIOP is committed to providing its members with education and resources to encourage environmentally-responsible choices, while ULI explores issues in sustainable development, focusing on resource efficiency.

In response to the growing field of sustainability, Mason’s Masters in Real Estate Development offers a specialization in sustainable real estate development. Within the sustainable development specialization, students gain an introduction to sustainability concepts and terminology and learn about the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, American Institute of Architects Sustainable Design Resources Guide, and the Natural Step (TNS) Framework. In addition, methods for the evaluation of sustainable sites, water/energy efficiency, sustainable materials and resources, and indoor air quality are presented.

NAIOP is also a strong partner of Mason’s real estate development program and its Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship.

At Mason, the Masters in Real Estate Development is a cross-disciplinary  degree drawing on the expertise of faculty members within the School of Business, School of Public Policy, and Volgenau School of Engineering. The program also has the unique advantage of having access to Mason’s Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship. The center acts as a catalyst between the MS in Real Estate Development program and the real estate industry. It provides students with a forum for professional development and offers them unique opportunities to connect with the real estate development community.
