Oliver T. Carr Jr. Delivers Leadership Lecture

Oliver T. Carr, Jr., the chairman of Carr Companies, delivered the 6th Annual Real Estate Leadership Lecture last April 16 at Founders Hall of the George Mason Arlington campus before an audience of real estate students, alumni, faculty, and industry professionals.  Reflecting on his more than five decades of experience in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area real estate market, Mr. Carr encouraged the students and young professionals in the audience to “think beyond projects and be city builders.”

The Carr family and their companies have been part of the Washington DC real estate industry since 1918. Beginning with his founding of The Oliver Carr Company in 1962 and of CarrAmerica in 1993, Mr. Carr has developed over 11 million square feet of office, retail, residential and hotel properties in the Washington, DC region and managed 26.3 million square feet of commercial space in 12 markets across the country.

Mr. Carr recalled the modest beginnings of his family’s start in the real estate industry. “The Carrs started off as brick makers for new buildings going up in a growing capital city,” he recalled. “I suppose we’ve been involved in the building of this city ever since.” Mr. Carr invited the next generation of his family, his two sons who have made their own mark in the local real estate industry, Oliver Carr III of Carr Properties and Tom Carr of FCPto talk as part of his lecture.

An inductee of the Washington Business Hall of Fame, Mr. Carr is also Chairman Emeritus of George Washington University’s Board of Trustees, former Director of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and a former Trustee of the Federal City Council. In 2016, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Urban Land Institute – Washington.

In addition to Carr Hospitality and Carr City Centers, Mr. Carr is Founder and Chairman of Carr Workplaces, a national workplace solutions company, and Rising Stars, 501(c) (3) Private Foundation dedicated to the support of organizations which help “at-risk” children succeed in their lives, especially as the result of their preparation for work. The Carr Companies are focused on helping build a sense of community wherever they are active in collaboration with local government and not-for-profits to help people thrive regardless of their station in life.
