Meet Dr. Angelos Stavrou: A Top Cyber Security Professor
The dedicated faculty in George Mason’s cyber security program work hard to prepare students for the real world. Their academic expertise combined with real-world experience provide a bridge in the classroom from academic theory to business practice.
Dr. Angelos Stavrou, associate professor of computer science in the Volgenau School of Engineering, is one such cyber security program professor. Mason’s interdisciplinary masters in cyber security program brings together faculty from the School of Business, Volgenau School of Engineering and Schar School of Policy and Government. Dr. Stavrou is also the director of the Center for Assurance Research and Engineering (CARE) at Mason.
Dr. Stavrou’s research focuses on the cyber security of large-scale systems whereas the second effort seeks to foster cross-disciplinary education as a foundation for the development and assessment of cyber security leadership education programs. He holds both a PhD and a PhM in computer science from Columbia University.
We asked Dr. Stavrou a few questions about the MS in Management of Secure Information Systems, and here is what he had to say:
What’s the best thing about teaching at Mason? The students’ diversity and background. I teach both at School of Business and at School of Engineering which allows me to interact with students that have very diverse background.
What’s your most memorable teaching moment in the cyber security masters program? With all of our cyber security classes, the global residency is one of their most memorable teaching experiences because the students are exposed to real-world cyber security firms and research. One of the most memorable moments was in one of the residencies in Taiwan where a team of students was able to discuss their ideas and products with different Taiwanese business and government organizations. After graduation, they were able to create a company that was successful in building and selling cyber security services for small businesses in Taiwan.
What is one goal you would like to see your students reach? I would like to see students reach their full potential in terms of personal growth and employment which, sometimes, is out of their initial comfort zone.
Why is Mason one of the best cyber security programs around? George Mason is a trendsetter with its forward-thinking cyber security undergraduate and graduate degrees. Several factors set our programs apart including world-class faculty, leading-edge research, practical relevance, cross-disciplinary degrees, experienced students, and International opportunities.
If you could describe Mason’s masters in cyber security program in one word, what would it be? Interdisciplinary
