Biography

Hale Tongren was one of the business schools first faculty members and served as faculty of marketing. His areas of expertise included marketing management, marketing in not-for-profit organizations, and marketing to older consumers and baby-boomers. He is author or co-author of two books, a number of professional articles, and instructional cases.

His academic honors include Faculty Member of the Year 1986 (GMU Alumni Association.); Faculty Member Contributing Most to Our Education 1987 (GMU Chapter, American Marketing Association.); Distinguished Professor of Marketing (1989) George Mason University Board of Visitors Distinguished Professor award 1989 and the George Mason University Distinguished Service award 1992. He was named Faculty Member of the Year 1986.

A long-serving member of the Faculty Senate, Tongren's tenure spanned more than thirty years. He was also on the Board of the George Mason Foundation and contributed a great deal toward developing external relationships with the business community in Northern Virginia. His other experience includes Trustee, George Mason Foundation (Chair Finance Committee and Asst. Treasurer) 1982-1990; President of Northland Broadcasting Co. Houlton, Maine; Georgia Pacific Corp. (Inventory and Quality Control), and the U.S. Navy (Computer Applications and Selection Division).
 
Tongren earned an MBA from the Harvard and DBA from George Washington University.
