Biography

Amitava Dutta is a professor and the area chair of information systems and operation management. He holds the LeRoy Eakin Endowed Chair in electronic commerce.

Prior to joining Mason in 1992, Dutta held faculty positions at the University of Iowa and the Simon School of The University of Rochester, New York. He was also a visiting professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India.

Dutta's research interests include telecommunications and electronic commerce, systems thinking/business simulation, and decision support systems. Journals in which his research has appeared include Management Science, Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Decision Support Systems, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, European Journal of Operational Research, and IIE Transactions.

Dutta serves on the editorial boards of several information technology journals and frequently serves on the program committees of national conferences in information technology management. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, and he is a member of IEEE, ACM and INFORMS.

Dutta was recently appointed an international research fellow at the Electronic Commerce Research Center of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. He has consulted with and conducted training seminars for several organizations in the government and private sector.

Dutta earned a B.Tech in electronics and telecommunications engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, an MS in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, and a PhD in management information systems from Purdue University.

  • Published an article titled, “Course Management System Adoption and Usage: A Process Theoretic Perspective” (coauthored with Rahul Roy and Priya Seetharaman) in Computers in Human Behavior in 2013.
  • Presented the paper titled, “System Dynamics Modeling of ICT Diffusion” at the 16th Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS 2012) in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam in  in 2012 (with coauthors Rahul Roy, Priya Seetharaman).The paper was also published in the conference proceedings.
  • Presented the paper titled “Knowledge Leadership: What, Why and How” (with coauthors) at the IFORS 2011 in Melbourne, Australia- VIC in 2011. The presentation was also published in the conference proceedings.
  • Published an article titled, “Software Bundling for Competitive Advantage: Vendor Strategies and Public Policy Implications” (with coauthors) in the Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems.
