Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to provide the student a thorough understanding of the financial regulation process, from the events that create the need for regulation to the economic impact after enactment. The student will conduct multiple forms of research ranging from textbook, articles, and case study materials to conducting an in-person interview with an Oversight Analyst with the Federal Reserve. Interactions with professionals in the Federal Reserve will provide a unique opportunity for a practical understanding of our financial regulation system while offering an opportunity to cultivate a professional network environment for possible career growth. 


Course Goals

Upon successful completion of this course the student will have a better understanding of (1) how business ethics play a role in the events warranting the need for regulation, (2) have more thorough knowledge of how regulations are created and enacted, (3) gain better knowledge of recent regulations that have altered the financial business landscape, and (4) conduct research to analyze how regulations have positively and negatively affected the economy. 


Research Area

  • Review history of financial regulation in the USA

  • Learn about some of the most impactful regulations to be enacted, and the events that brought them into existence 

  • Study the economic impact before, during, and after large regulations are enacted 

  • Examine the correlation between politics and regulations with specific focus on enactment and repeals as part of political agendas 

  • Research how business ethics play a part in the events leading to the need for financial regulations


Action Items

  • Use educational sources to understand the above research topics 

  • Conduct an in-person interview with an Oversight Analyst with the Federal Reserve 

  • Use all materials to draft a report which will offer a comprehensive compilation of my research.


Assignments

The student will deliver two 5-page papers that will convey completed research and accompanied analysis of said research.

Paper 1: 
This paper will review the history of federal regulations in the financial industry, the governing body that has the power to enact and monitor regulations, and how politics impact regulation and deregulation. 

Paper 2: 
This paper will review recent regulations that have been enacted, the events which created the need for regulation, and the economic impact of these regulations. Furthermore, the paper will review the business ethics and practices of companies responsible for the need of further regulations.
