Course Description

Information technology (IT) has transformed our society and the business environment. It has influenced almost every business discipline and activity including product design, production, purchasing, marketing, customer and supplier relationships. The objectives of this course are to help students to understand the managerial and strategic perspective on IT and systems and to develop the critical thinking to assess how information technology shaped business strategy, innovation, and operations in firms. Furthermore, students will learn basic analytical skills to analyze data for business decision-making processes. IT technology-enabled innovation has become a strategic imperative for many firms. Therefore, it is important that students, as future business leaders, understand the potential role of IT in creating value and competitive advantage. Learning in the course will be accomplished through a combination of lectures and case discussions. Case study discussions will be used to illustrate how major concepts and analytical frameworks can be applied in practice. 


Course Objective

Upon completion of this course, the student should have 

  • Understand how IT influences the business environment 
  • Analyzing and assessing the impact of IT on business performance 
  • An understanding of new technology trends and their importance in strategy development 
  • An understanding of the role of data, information, and knowledge in supporting the decision-making activities of the organization 
  • Supporting executive decision making with business intelligence/analytics 
  • Identifying key challenges to managing the security of and risk to IT infrastructure 
  • Understanding practices and challenges in software development and implementation projects 
  • Teamwork Goal: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills needed to form, lead, and work effectively with diverse organizational teams. 
  • Communication Goal: Effectively write, speak, and present information necessary to explain problems and solutions. 

Grading for the course will be based on total points earned and will be as follows: 

A+ 97% - 100%
A 93% - 96.99%
A- 90% - 92.99%
B+ 87% - 89.99%
B 82% - 87.99%
B- 80% - 81.99%
C+ 76% - 79.99%
C 70% - 75.99%
D 64% - 69.99%
