This three-credit course includes a weeklong international student study tour led by an MRED professor. Students interact with real estate, business and government leaders, participate in seminars, and visit sites of local or multinational real estate and development companies. Students will obtain hands-on, real-world experience through their site visits, discussions with industry professionals, and international experience. Students take the global real estate experience course after completing (or concurrently taking) the required courses. Students are expected to use good judgement in their conduct and represent George Mason University in a positive manner. Additional costs such as travel expenses may be incurred.
Learning Objectives
The global real estate experience is designed to give students an opportunity to develop personal familiarity with global real estate and some of the issues faced by developers in other countries. Beyond the social and cultural dimensions that the residency explores, the course focuses on developing an increased understanding of global real estate, development, finance, entitlements, markets, and real estate opportunities. The ultimate goal of the global residency is to help students develop leadership skills and a broader perspective on the real estate development industry.
By providing MRED students with opportunities to hear directly from international developers, managers and governmental authorities, the residency builds on the foundations developed during the first year of the program. Students explore applications of core ideas in international settings. As a result of this focus, the global residency site visits and speakers are to be high-level executives within their firms or organizations.

Learning Objectives
- Provide students with an opportunity to build on the foundations developed throughout the first year of the MRED program from a global perspective.
- Facilitate student participation in all the activities of the course including listening, observing, reading, and writing so the student will gain an enhanced understanding of how the global real estate development industry functions.
- Create a framework to compare development practices across the World and the United States.
- Increase their understanding of how global forces impact real estate development; how strategies can be developed to effectively address those forces, and potential obstacles to implementing those strategies.
- Enhance students’ understanding of the legal, political, financial and regulatory environment of countries other than the U.S.
- Allow students to experience a real estate development and business culture very different from their own.
