Shortly after transferring from Virginia Commonwealth University, Carrie He, BS Accounting ’20, MS Accounting ’21, felt the pull to change career paths and study accounting.

Here, they explain why they chose Mason, and offer advice to others considering master’s degrees in business.

With a wide array of options, accounting students at the Donald G. Costello College of Business at George Mason University are able to choose the types of experiential learning that will best prepare them for their future careers.

For Bret Johnson, academic director of the Master of Science in Accounting program at George Mason University School of Business, joining Mason was like coming home. Johnson previously lived in Fairfax County where he spent 10 years working as a senior auditor for Ernst & Young and as a staff accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), prior to pursuing his PhD at Ohio State.

An active board member and past chair of the Accounting Advisory Council at the George Mason University School of Business, A.J. Eschle, BS Accounting ’08, MBA ’12, works with the accounting area to prepare students for the accounting profession and to ensure that the school’s programs are where they need to be.

Each year, selected business schools can nominate up to two students for the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholars Program. For another consecutive year, both of the nominees from the George Mason University School of Business were selected for scholarships.

Learning new software and technology in the graduate certificate program for accounting analytics has helped Allison Sanchez attain a highly sought internship and put her on the fast track to become a leading professional in her field.
