Accounting Advisory Council

To increase the community's participation in the development of future accounting professionals, the Accounting Area in the School of Business at George Mason University maintains a strong tradition of building partnerships through the Accounting Advisory Council. The council's mission is to advise and assist the Accounting Area in the achievement of the Area’s mission to prepare our graduates to be successful contributors to an increasingly global accounting profession.

Comprised of leaders in the accounting community, the Accounting Advisory Council provides strategic guidance to the Accounting Area as the Area seeks to align its undergraduate and masters programs to the needs of the accounting profession.

Erin Ogburn is currently the Chief People Officer (Partner) at Kearney & Company, an accounting and consulting Firm and a “Best Place to Work” (Washington Business Journal) in Alexandria, VA. She attended George Mason University as an undergraduate and later Virginia Tech for her master’s degree. She has had the opportunity to gain experience over the years within multiple facets of Recruitment and Human Resources. Today she enjoys the fast pace of leading Talent Acquisition, Human Resources, Security, Resource Management, and more. Erin has loved being working for Kearney for many years, allowing her the opportunity to build and lead a fabulous People Services Team, help to create Kearney’s culture, programs, and policies, all related to the Firm’s biggest asset, its people.

Samim has been with Grossberg Company LLP her entire career and prides herself in the relationships she has developed with her clients, colleagues and staff. Samim’s focus is on advising small business entrepreneurs on both accounting and tax issues and has a strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and compliance.

Jeanette Franzel serves on the Ernst and Young (EY) Independent Audit Quality Committee for the U.S. Audit Practice, advising senior leadership on strengthening audit quality. She also serves on the Research Advisory Board of the Center for Audit Quality (CAQ), promoting independent academic research that has important, real-world impact on audit quality. Franzel provides expert consulting to the Center for Audit Excellence at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). She recently led projects to assess the organizational and financial audit capacity of the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) of the Republic of Armenia and the Dominican Republic, and continues to be involved in ongoing efforts to build audit capacity in those countries.

Asif Khan is a Director at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in the Financial Management and Assurance team. He focuses on financial management issue areas on GAO’s High Risk List. His current focus is on improving financial management at the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. Khan supports oversight of these departments’ financial management transformation efforts through financial and performance audits and recommendations for removing impediments to financial statement auditability, strengthening internal controls, and modernizing business processes.

She has a vast understanding of how the indirect rate structure affects overall enterprise operations for both government contractors and not-for-profit organizations. Helaine serves as treasurer on the board of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. She is involved with a program within the Community Foundation called Business Women’s Giving Circle of Northern Virginia. She is also an active member with Social4Good.
